The abbey of Ettal > The architects and artists The history of construction description

Of all those who participated in the construction and furnishings of the church only the most important can be mentioned. It has already been stated that for the period of the Middle Ages no names are known. Already mentioned were the two decisive architects Henrico Zucalli (around 1642-1742) and Joseph Schmuzer (1683-1752). The stucco of the main interior of the church was done by two irnportant representatives of the Wessobrunn ornamental plaster sdhool: Johann Georg Uebelherr (1703-1763) and Franz Xaver Schmuzer (1713-1775). Two fresco painters are responsible for the artistic decoration: Johann Jakob Zeiller from Reutte in Tyrol (1708-1783) and Martin Knoller, also from Tyrol (1725-1804). Zeiller did the main dome, the fresco of the foundation of the monastery over the choir arch as well as the painting over the altar of the Blessed Sacrament. Knoller did the painting of the choir, the painting over the high altar and three other altar paintings. The Munich sculptor and "Father of the Bavarian rococo sculpture" Johann Baptist Straub (1704-1784) created the ensemble of altars in the rotunda between 1756 and 1762. The other altar paintings were done by the royal court artist of Kempten Franz Georg Hermann and by the brothers Thomas and Felix Anton Schefffler. The Munich court sculptor Roman Anton Boos created the reliefs on the base of the high altar and in the walls of the chair room in the late eighteenth century. The confessionals are the work of the local woodcarving workshop of the Zwinks. The organ (1753) is the work of the organ builder Johann Georg Hoerthrich from Swabia.
